MATERIALS
BERNAT Ski and Sports (2 oz. skeins) — 5(6-6-6)
1 pair each straight knitting needles Nos. 4 and 8 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 set d p needles No. 4
GAUGE: 11 sts = 2 inches; 6 rows = 1 inch
PATTERN STITCH: To be worked on sts as designated.
Row 1: P 3, * K 2 tog, but do not drop sts from needle, K the first st on left hand needle once more, drop both sts from needle (a right twist worked), work 2 more right twists on next 4 sts, P 3, repeat from * to marker.
Row 2: K 3, * P 6, K 3, repeat from * to marker.
Row 3: P 3, * K 1, work 2 right twists on next 4 sts, K 1, P 3, repeat from * to marker.
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Repeat these 4 rows for pattern stitch.
BACK: Using No. 4 straight needles, cast on 84(88-94-96) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2½ inches. Change to No. 8 needles. Row 1: P 0(2-0-1), K 2, * P 3, K 2, repeat from * 4(4-5-5) times more, put a marker on needle, work Row 1 of pattern st on next 30 sts, put a marker on needle, ** K 2, P 3, repeat from ** 4(4-5-5) times more, K 2, P 0(2-0-1). Row 2: K 0(2-0-1), P 2, * K 3, P 2, repeat from * 4(4-5-5) times more, work Row 2 of pattern st to next marker, ** P 2, K 3, repeat from ** 4(4-5-5) times more, P 2, K 0(2-0-1). Keeping the 30 sts between markers in pattern st and remaining sts in rib pattern as established, work even until piece measures 11(11½-12-12½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 5(5-6-6) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 4(4-5-5) times. Work even on 66(70-72-74) sts until armholes measure 5½(6-6½-7) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 4 rows bind off 7 sts. At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6(7-8-8) sts. Sl remaining 26(28-28-30) sts onto a holder.
FRONT: Work to correspond to back until armholes measure 3(3½-4-4½) inches — 66(70-72-74) sts. SHAPE NECK: Work 27(28-29-29) sts, sl center 12(14-14-16) sts onto a holder, join another ball of yarn and work to end of row. Working on both sides at once, at each neck edge dec 1 st every other row 7 times. Work even on 20(21-22-22) sts of each side until armholes measure 5½(6-6½-7) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At each arm edge bind off 7 sts twice and 6(7-8-8) sts once.
SLEEVES: Using No. 4 straight needles, cast on 40(42-42-46) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 3 inches. Change to No. 8 needles. Row 1: P 2(3-3-0), K 2, * P 3, K 2, repeat from * 1(1-1-2) times more, put a marker on needle, work Row 1 of pattern st on next 12 sts, put a marker on needle, ** K 2, P 3, repeat from ** 1(1-1-2) times more, K 2, P 2(3-3-0). Row 2: K 2(3-3-0), P 2, * K 3, P 2, repeat from * 1(1-1-2) times more, work in pattern st to next marker, ** P 2, K 3, repeat from ** 1(1-1-2) times more, P 2, K 2(3-3-0). Keeping the 12 sts between markers in pattern st and remaining sts in rib pattern as established, inc 1 st each end of needle every 1½(1½-1-1½) inches 8(8-10-9) times, forming new rib patterns as sts are increased. Work even on 56(58-62-64) sts until piece measures 15½(16-16½-17) inches. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 5(5-6-6) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 2½(3-3½-4) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off remaining sts.
FINISHING: Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves. TURTLE NECK: Using d p needles, with right side facing you, pick up 78(80-82-84) sts around neck, including sts from holders. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 3 inches. Bind off. Block to size.
