End row with thread over, k 1, sl, k, and pass, k 1. 2nd row: P across. Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 9 inches from top of ribbing, ending with the p row. 1st row of armhole: Bind off 7 sts, k 2 together, k 1, thread over, k 1, pattern across. 2nd row: Bind off 7 sts, p across. 3rd row: Same as 1st row of pattern. 4th row: P 1, p 2 together, p to within 3 sts from end, p 2 together, p 1. Work next row in pattern, and continue to decrease at both ends as described in every p row until 7 sts on each end have been removed (86 sts on needle). Work even for 4½ inches. Bind off 6 sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then 7 sts for 6 times. Bind off remaining 32 sts for back of neck.
Front. Cast on 104 sts in same manner as done for the back, and work in ribbing for 4 inches. Change to larger needles and k 1 row, increasing 1 st in every 6th st (121 sts on needle). P next row. Work in pattern to correspond with back, until there are 7 rows even after the last armhole decrease, ending with k row. On the next p row, work over 1st 45 sts, turn (leaving remaining 48 sts on needle to be worked later for left side of front), and cast on 8 sts, k 9, work pattern across. On p row, work the last 8 sts in garter st. Work 2 more rows. On next row (5th) make a buttonhole by binding off 4th, 5th, 6th sts; and on the p row cast on 3 sts to correspond to those bound off. Work 4 more rows, then bind off 9 sts on next k row once, then 2 sts on each k row, until there are 28 sts left. Then on the p row (shoulder end) bind off 6 sts once, and 7 each p row until no sts are left, working neck edge even. Break off. Left Front. Join thread at front, k the first 3 sts, p across. Work in pattern until there are 12 rows, always knitting the first 3 sts on p row. Bind off 2 sts at neck edge each p row until 28 sts are left, then shape shoulder as done on right front.

P 1 row and work in pattern for 3 inches from top of ribbing. Bind off 7 sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then decrease 1 st at both ends of every p row until 40 sts are on needle. Turn and k back. 3rd row: Bind off 7 sts, * thread over, k 1, repeat from *, ending k 1. 4th row: K back. Work 3rd and 4th rows until lace measures 12 inches. Then bind off all sts. With crochet hook; attach thread at loose end of lace and work 1 s c in the last sts bound off. Then ch 3, 1 s c between the points, ch 3, 1 s c in point, and continue in this manner to end of lace. Then work 1 s c in end of every ridge of tab, and finish neck with 1 s c around. Sew half of the length of lace straight down the front, then loop up the other half and sew to give effect of double lace, as in illustration.
