MATERIALS
BERNAT Ski and Sports (2 oz. skeins) — 5(6-6-6) Main Color (M C); 1(2-2-2) Contrasting Color (C C)
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 5 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 set d p needles No. 5
GAUGE: 11 sts = 2 inches; 7 rows = 1 inch
BACK: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 85(89-93-97) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 1 inch, ending with a K row. K the next 2 rows to form hemline and continue in stockinette st until piece measures 11(11½-12-12½) inches above hemline. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 5(5-5-6) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 4(5-5-5) times. Work even on 67(69-73-75) sts until armholes measure 5½(6-6½-7) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 4 rows bind off 7 sts. At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 7(8-8-9) sts. Sl remaining 25 (25-29-29) sts onto a holder.
FRONT: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 37(39-41-43) sts; using C C, cast on 15 sts to same needle; join another ball of M C and cast on 37(39-41-43) sts — 89(93-97-101) sts. Row 1: K 37(39-41-43) sts in M C, using C C, K 1, P 1 in ribbing on 15 center sts, K remaining 37(39-41-43) sts in M C. Row 2: P 37(39-41-43) sts in M C, using C C, P 1, K 1 in ribbing on center 15 sts, P last 37(39-41-43) sts in M C. Repeat these 2 rows for 1 inch, ending with a right side row. Keeping colors as established, K the next row to form hemline. LEFT SIDE OF FRONT: Using M C, K 37(39-41-43) sts, sl remaining sts onto a holder. Work even in stockinette st until piece measures 11(11½-12-12½) inches above hemline. SHAPE ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 5(5-5-6) sts. SHAPE CENTER EDGE: At the beg of next row dec 1 st (center edge). Continuing to dec 1 st at center edge every 4th row 9(9-11-11) times more, at arm edge dec 1 st every other row 4(5-5-5) times. Work even on 18(19-19-20) sts until armhole measures 5½(6-6½-7) inches. SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 7 sts twice and 4(5-5-6) sts once. RIGHT SIDE OF FRONT: Sl 15 C C sts onto a holder; sl remaining 37(39-41-43) sts onto straight needles. Join M C and work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping. CENTER FRONT: Sl 15 C C sts onto straight needles and continue in K 1, P 1 ribbing until piece is same length as side fronts to start of center shaping. On next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every 4th row 9(9-11-11) times more, forming new ribs as sts are increased — 35(35-39-39) sts. SHAPE NECK: Work 8 sts, sl center 19(19-23-23) sts onto a holder, join another ball of C C and work to end of row. Working on both sides at once, at each neck edge dec 1 st EVERY ROW 5 times. Work even on 3 sts until piece is same length as front to end of shoulder shaping. Bind off.
SLEEVES: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 34(36- 38-40) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 1 inch, ending with a K row. K the next 2 rows to form hemline and continue in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every 1 inch 11(11-12-12) times. Work even on 56(58-62-64) sts until piece measures 15½(16-16½_17) inches above hemline. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 5(5-5-6) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 2½(3-3½-4) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off remaining sts.
FINISHING: Sew center front in place. Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Hem lower edge of sweater and sleeves. HOOD: Using d p needles and C C, with right side facing you, and starting at right neck edge pick up 84(84-92-92) sts around neck including sts from holders. Put a marker in work. Join and work round and round in K 1, P 1 ribbing until piece measures 2½ inches above marker in work, ending 2 sts before marker. Sl next 23(23-27-27) sts onto one d p needle for front of hood. Turn and work back and forth in ribbing on remaining 61(61-65-65) sts until piece measures 7 inches above marker in work. SHAPE TOP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 21 sts. Work even in ribbing on 19(19-23-23) sts until top is same length as bound off edges, ending with a wrong side row. Sew sides to bound off edges. On next row K 1, P 1 in ribbing on 19(19-23-23) sts of top, pick up 32 sts on left edge of hood, K 1, P 1 in ribbing on 23(23-27-27) sts of front, pick up 32 sts on other side of hood — 106(106-114-114) sts. Join and work round and round in ribbing for 6 rounds more. Bind off. Block.
