Gold Medal Fingering Yarn (A Jack Frost Product)—6 1-oz. Skeins

BACK: With No. 3 Needles cast on 109 sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 1 ½ in. Work even in stockinette st until piece measures 11 ½ in. from lower edge. Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows; decrease 1 st at each end every other row 4 times. Work even until piece measures 5 ½ in. from bound off sts at under arm. Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 8 rows. Bind off remaining sts.

RIGHT FRONT: With No. 3 Needles cast on 73 sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, working first buttonhole on the 12th row as follows: P 1, K 1, over first 4 sts, bind off next 3 sts, work across row. On next row cast on 3 sts over the 3 bound off sts. Repeat buttonholes every 22 rows to neck edge. When piece measures 1 ½ in. from lower edge, keeping first 11 sts worked in ribbing of P 1, K 1, for buttonhole band, work remaining sts in pattern as follows: Row 1 (right side)—K 1, P 1, over first 11 sts, * P 2, K 2, P 2, K 6, repeat from * across row ending P 2. Row 2—K 2, * P 6, K 2, P 2, K 2, repeat from * across row ending P 1, K 1, over last 11 sts. Repeat above 2 rows twice; on 7th row work a cable twist over each rib of K 6 as follows: slip the first 3 sts onto double pointed needle, hold in back of work. K the next 3 sts, then bring the 3 slipped sts forward, and K them. Repeat cable twists every 8th row to neck edge. When piece measures 11 ½ in. from lower edge, bind off 10 sts at underarm edge once; decrease 1 st at underarm edge every other row 10 times. Work even until armhole measures 4 in. from bound off sts at underarm, ending at front edge. K 1, P 1, over first 11 sts, place on st-holder. Bind off next 8 sts, then 2 sts at neck edge every other row 5 times. Work even until armhole measures 5 ½ in. from underarm. Starting at shoulder edge, bind off 6 sts every other row 4 times. Work left front to correspond, omitting buttonholes. Sew shoulder seams.

NECKBAND: With No. 2 Needles, on right side of garment, pick up 105 sts from end to end of neckband, including the 11 sts on each front which were placed on st-holder for buttonhole band. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 7 rows, working last buttonhole on 3rd row. Bind off loosely.

SLEEVES: With No. 2 Needles cast on 45 sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 3 in. Change to No. 3 Needles increasing to 64 sts at even intervals across row. Work in stockinette st for 2 in. Increase 1 st at each end of next row, and every 8th row to 78 sts. Work even until piece measures 16 in. or desired length to underarm. Bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows; decrease 1 st at each end every other row 8 times. Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 6 rows. Bind off remaining sts.

Sew sleeve and underarm seams. Sew sleeves in place.
