Cardigan Sweater Pattern | Sizes 8 (10-12-14)

These directions are for subteen size 8. Changes for subteen sizes 10, 12 and 14 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS
BERNAT Nylo Sports (2 oz. balls) — 5(5-6-6)
1 pair each straight knitting needles Nos. 3 and 5 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 steel crochet hook No. 3
1½ yds 1 inch grosgrain ribbon
7 buttons

GAUGE: 6 sts = 1 inch; 8 rows = 1 inch

BACK: Using No. 3 needles, cast on 96(100-104-110) sts. K 2, P 2 in ribbing for 2½ inches. Change to No. 5 needles and work even in stockinette st until piece measures 11(11½-12-12½) inches, ending with a P row. SHAPE FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 5 sts. On the next row K 2, K 2 tog (dec), K to last 4 sts, sl 1, K 1, psso, (dec), K 2. Continue to dec 1 st at each arm edge in this manner every other row 25(27-29-30) times more. Sl remaining 34(34-34-38) sts onto a holder.

LEFT FRONT: Using No. 3 needles and M C, cast on 56 (56-60-60) sts. Row 1: P 2, K 2 in ribbing to last 10 sts, put a marker in work K 1, P 1 in ribbing to end of row. Row 2: K 1, P 1 in ribbing to marker (front band), K 2, P 2 in ribbing to end of row. Repeat these 2 rows for 2½ inches, ending at front edge. On the next row K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 10 sts and sl these sts onto a holder to be worked later for front band, P remaining sts. Change to No. 5 nee­dles and K the next row, inc 1 st each end of needle on Sizes 10 and 14 ONLY. Continue in stockinette st on 46(48-50-52) sts until piece measures 11(11½-12-12½) inches. SHAPE FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 5 sts. On the next K row K 2, K 2 tog (dec), K to end of row. Continue in this manner to dec 1 st at arm edge every other row 21(23-25-26) times more. SHAPE NECK: Continuing to dec 1 st at arm edge 4 times more, at neck edge bind off 5(5-5-6) sts once and 5 sts twice. LEFT FRONT BAND: Sl 10 sts from holder onto No. 3 needles. Join yarn at center edge and continue in K 1, P 1 ribbing until piece is same length as front edge to start of neck shaping. Sl sts onto a holder.

RIGHT FRONT AND RIGHT FRONT BAND: Work to cor­respond to left front and left front band, reversing placing of front band and all shaping and forming first buttonhole when piece measures ½ inch. BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge, work 3 sts, bind off the next 3 sts, work to end of row. On next row cast on 3 sts over those bound off previous row. Make 6 more buttonholes, evenly spaced — the last one to be made 2 rows below start of neck shaping. DECREASE FOR FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN ARMHOLE by knitting to last 4 sts, sl 1, K 1, psso, K 2.

SLEEVES: Using No. 3 needles, cast on 44(48-52-52) sts. K 2, P 2 in ribbing for 2½ inches. Change to No. 5 needles and work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾ inch 12(12-12-13) times. Work even on 68(72-76-78) sts until piece measures 14½(15-15½-16) inches, ending with a P row. SHAPE FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 5 sts. On next row K 2, K 2 tog, K to last 4 sts, sl 1, K 1, psso, K 2. Continue in this manner to dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 25(27-29-30) times more. Sl remaining 6 sts onto a holder.

FINISHING: Sew underarm seams. Sew sleeves to front and back armholes. Sew sleeve seams. Sew front bands in place. NECKBAND: Using No. 3 needles, with right side facing you, pick up 90(90-90-94) sts around neck including sts from holders. Keeping the 10 sts of each front band in K 1, P 1 ribbing, work remaining sts in K 2, P 2 ribbing until piece measures 1½ inches, ending with a right side row. K the next row to form hemline and continue in ribbing in same manner as before until piece measures 1¼ inches above hemline. Bind off in ribbing. Fold neckband on hem­line and sew front edges. With right side facing you, work 1 row s c on each front edge of sweater and neckband Finish buttonhole. Block to size. Face fronts with ribbon. Sew on buttons.
