MATERIALS
BERNAT Nylo Germantown (2 oz. skeins) — 7(7-8-8)
1 pair each straight knitting needles Nos. 5 and 10 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 steel crochet hook No. 0
7 buttons
GAUGE: 9 sts = 2 inches; 13 rows = 2 inches
PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 2 sts plus 1.
Row 1: K 1, * y o, sl 1 st as if to P, K 1, repeat from * across row.
Row 2: (right side): K 1, * K tog the slipped st and y o, inserting needle in back of sts, K 1, repeat from * across row.
Repeat these 2 rows for pattern stitch.
NOTE: When decreasing and binding off, always count y o and sl st as one st.
BACK: Using No. 5 needles, cast on 67(71-75-81) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 1 inch, ending with a P row. P the next row to form hemline. Change to No. 10 needles and work in pattern st until piece measures 11½(12-12½-13) inches above hemline, ending with Row 1. SHAPE ARMHOLES: Row 1: (right side): At the beg of the next row bind off 4(4-4-6) sts, work to end of row. Row 2: At the beg of the next row bind off 4(4-4-6) sts, * y o, sl 1 as to P, K 1, repeat from * to end of row. Rows 3 and 5: P 2, K 2, P 1, K 2, P 1, K 2 tog, work in pattern st to last 10 sts, K 1, sl 1, psso, P 1, K 2, P 1, K 2, P 2. Row 4: K 2, P 2, K 1, P 2, K 1, y o, sl 1 as to P, * K 1, y o, sl 1 as to P, repeat from * to last 8 sts, K 1, P 2, K 1, P 2, K 2. Row 6: K 2, P 2, K 1, P 2, K 1, * y o, sl 1 as to P, K 1, repeat from * to last 8 sts, K1, P 2, K 1, P 2, K 2 — 55(59-63-65) sts. Keeping 8 sts each end of needle in pattern as established, work even in pattern st on remaining sts until armholes measure 5¾(6¼-6¾-7¼) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 4 rows bind off 6 sts. At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 5(7-8-9) sts. Bind off remaining 21(21-23-23) sts.
POCKET LININGS: Make 2. Using No. 5 needles, cast on 21(21-23-23) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 3½ inches, ending with a P row. Sl sts onto a holder.
LEFT FRONT: Using No. 5 needles, cast on 33(35-37-39) sts. Work even in stockinette st for 1 inch, ending with a P row. P the next row to form hemline. Change to No. 10 needles. At the beg of the next row cast on 17 sts for front band and facing— 50(52-54-56) sts. Row 1: P 17, work in pattern st on remaining 33(35-37-39) sts. Row 2: Work in pattern st to last 17 sts, K 8, sl 1, K 8. Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 4½ inches above hemline, ending with Row 2. POCKET OPENING: Work 22 sts, sl the next 21(21-23-23) sts onto a holder, * y o, sl 1, K 1, repeat from * to end of row. INSERT POCKET: Work in pattern st to pocket opening, K the 21(21-23-23) sts of pocket lining to same needle, work to end of row— 50(52-54-56) sts. Work even in pattern as established until piece measures 11½(12-12½-13) inches above hemline. SHAPE ARMHOLE: Row 1: At arm edge bind off 4(4-4-6) sts, work to end of row. Row 2: Work even. Rows 3 and 5: P 2, K 2, P 1, K 2, P 1, K 2 tog, work to end of row. Rows 4 and 6: Work to last 8 sts, K 1, P 2, K 1, P 2, K 2. Work even in pattern as established on 44(46-48-48) sts until armhole measures 2(2½-3-3½) inches. SHAPE NECK: At front edge bind off 17 sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 10(10-11-10) times. Work even on 17(19-20-21) sts until armhole measures 5¾(6¼-6¾-7¼) inches. SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 6 sts twice and 5(7-8-9) sts once.
RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front, reversing placing of pocket and all shaping and forming first double buttonhole when piece measures 1 inch above hemline. DOUBLE BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge, K 3, bind off the next 3 sts, K 1, sl 1, K 2, bind off the next 3 sts, work to end of row. On next row cast on 3 sts over each group of 3 sts bound off previous row. Make 6 more double button holes, evenly spaced — the last one to be made ½ inch below start of neck shaping. Decrease for armhole shaping by working to last 10 sts, sl 1, K 1, psso, P 1, K 2, P 1, K 2, P 2.
SLEEVES: Using No. 5 needles, cast on 42(42-44-44) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2 inches. K the next row, inc at even intervals to 51(53-55-57) sts. Change to No. 10 needles and work even in pattern st until piece measures 15½(16-16½-17) inches. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 4(4-4-6) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 2¾(3¼-3¾-4¼) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6(6-6-4) rows bind off 2 sts. Bind off remaining sts.
COLLAR: Using No. 10 needles, cast on 7 sts. Mark end of first row for outer edge. Work in pattern st, inc 1 st at outer edge every 4th row 4 times and every other row 10 times. Put a marker in work. Work even on 21 sts until piece measures 5(5-5½-4½) inches above marker in work. On next row dec 1 st at outer edge and repeat this dec every other row 10 times and every 4th row 3 times. Work even on 7 sts for 4 rows. Bind off.
FINISHING: Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves. Turn under and hem lower edge and front facings. POCKET FACING: With right side facing you, sl 21(21-23-23) sts from holder onto No. 5 needles. K the next 2 rows to form hemline and continue in stockinette st for 3 rows more. Bind off. Sew pocket linings in place. Sew on collar to within 1 inch of each front edge. With right side facing you, work 1 row s c around front, lower and collar edges and on top of pockets. Block. Finish buttonholes. Sew on buttons.
